The Ministry of AYUSH is an initiative by the Government of India to promote the propagation and
development of AYUSH systems of health care and medicine in India. AYUSH, abbreviated Ayurveda, Yoga,
Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy, and Naturopathy was formed on November 9, 2014. In March 1995, the Department
of Indian System of Medicine was created, which was later renamed as AYUSH in the year 2003. The
objective of creating the department was to focus on providing attention to the development of the
prevalent and practised six Indian systems of medicine: Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy, and
Naturopathy.
In the year 2006, the concept of ‘mainstreaming the AYUSH and revitalisation of local health traditions’
was introduced. This resulted in the strengthening of public health services, utilisation of untapped
AYUSH therapeutics, workforce and management principles for health problems at different levels.
